Vinyl Replacement Windows - Compare Quality

I have written a number of articles about this subject matter but today I simply want to write about vinyl replacement windows to compare quality.

The last time I went shopping for a window replacement I dealt with more than 10 companies and believe me when I say every sales person said their was the best. Buying vinyl replacement windows is almost like buying a used car. Some of the ones I looked at include Anlin, Simonton, Milgard, Polybau, Amerimax and Atrium. Truth is they were all great especially in terms of quality.

One thing to note is that quality is a subjective word. The best quality depends on what suites you best. For example while some may say durable windows means quality others can say an expensive price means quality even if nothing is said about durability.

When it comes to vinyl replacement windows compare quality using different key features not just one. Here is my list of determinants of vinyl replacement window quality to compare - I include brand examples as I go along.

1. Must have good ratings industry wide especially NFRC ratings. Tri-state is a good example here.
2. Noise reduction: If you can get a window that keeps the noise out especially for those who live along a busy road or highway. Again Tri-state
3. The windows must be sturdy and reliable. Alpha windows are known for this feature as well as Tri-state.
4. The replacement windows must be low-e and offer UV protection from the sunlight.
5. If you are particular about energy sufficiency then getting some with warm edge spacers. You shouldn't overlook those that use aluminum spacers as well.
6. Must be a thicker double pane window like Alpha windows.

Jasime--I really appreciated your post about quality and vinyl windows. I just wanted to weigh in to say another true measure of quality should be the opinions of builders and remodeling professionals that install windows and doors on a daily basis. It's here that the quality of Simonton Windows shines. According to their web site at www.simonton.com, Simonton--in an independent study--just received a #1 rating in the vinyl windows category by readers in Builder magazine's Brand Use study (the fourth time in recent years). Not to mention the fact that Simonton Windows won the 2008J.D. Power Award rated #1 in Builder and Remodeler Satisfaction. It seems builders and remodelers have spoken on quality and Simonton Windows is leading the pack.
